“ICER announces an innovative new jump, never before seen in the United States, for this year’s 2008 big air ski and snowboard contest. For the next evolution of Esurance ICER AIR, skiers and snowboarders will be launched using a catapult system developed in Finland by Soul Productions. The catapult will rocket the athletes down a 120 foot- long track and launch them 30 feet in the air, at distances of up to 70 feet onto a corner, or hip landing. The new structure creates an exciting opportunity for the skiers and snowboarders to showcase their skills and ensures the audience can be close to the action. The catapult system will allow Esurance ICER AIR to return to its urban roots, as it can be set up in almost any environment or cityscape.

Travis Pastrana not only rocks the motobike, he’s killin’ it in the rally car. His latest win at the Ojibwe Forests Rally has him barreling towards the championship title.

FROM EXPN NEWS: Subaru Rally Team USA driver Travis Pastrana grabbed victory at the Ojibwe Forests Rally, round seven of the 2008 Rally America National Championship, after his Subaru teammate Ken Block crashed out of the event while leading with just miles before the finish. The victory further extends Pastrana’s championship lead and nearly guarantees him a third straight Rally America National Championship driver’s title. If Pastrana finishes 6th or better in either of the two remaining rounds he and his co-driver Derek Ringer will mathematically secure the championship.

The Ojibwe Forests Rally featured over 140 miles of technical, sandy gravel, forest roads in northern Minnesota, around the town of Bemidji. The event is a favorite amongst rally drivers for its demanding fast and flowing roads and numerous night stages.

The story of the rally started out with the dominating drive of Ken Block, whose championship hopes hinged on winning the Ojibwe Forests Rally and closing in on points leader Pastrana. Block and his co-driver Alex Gelsomino led the field from the second stage in his 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI and maintained a healthy lead over the hard charging Pastrana throughout the two-day event. “We were out-driven all day today and yesterday,” said Pastrana late Saturday. “When we pushed to gain back time on Block he just pushed back, we weren’t able to catch him.”

Block held a 19-second lead on Pastrana heading into the final stage of the event, a daunting 22-mile stage, one of the longest stages in US rallying. It was a ‘must-win’ situation for Block, who knew that his gap to Pastrana on a massive 22-mile stage didn’t afford him the opportunity to drive conservatively.

“I had to win Ojibwe to stay in the hunt for the championship and I drove my best rally of the year only to have it go extremely bad on the last stage with only a few miles to go,” explained Block.

With just five miles left in the stage, Block went off the road and hit a tree at high speed, instantly ending his rally and nearly any hope of catching Pastrana in the points race. Both Block and Gelsomino walked away unharmed but extremely disappointed. “I am devastated,” said Block. “I did exactly what I needed to do to win here and set up a big title fight for the rest of the year but one mistake is all it took to end it all.” Block remains third overall in the Rally America standings.

Subaru Rally Team USA now heads straight to New Zealand for Round 11 of the FIA World Rally Championship where SRT USA driver Ken Block will be racing in the P-WRC event. Rally New Zealand is based in Hamilton and starts Thursday August 28th.

FROM EXPN.COM

With Stefan Janoski and Stevie Williams amongst the latest skateboarders to confirm their attendance at this year’s Red Bull Manny Mania, this contest is set to be historic even before the first trick is landed. The likes of these core skateboarders have not been seen in the same room let alone the same contest ever.

Last year saw the rise of a new kind of skateboard contest, with top pros coming out in force to prove who is skateboarding’s technical wizard. This year’s field truly represents the core of skateboarding and for most of these pros Manny Mania is the only contest they’ll do all year.

With New York City home to so many skateboarders and so many more in town for a weekend that sees New York the center of the skateboard world with the Back To The Banks contest on the day before. The event is expected to draw a huge crowd of die-hard skate fans and pros alike, all coming to witness some of the most technical skateboarding ever.

Kaisyu Tanaka who entered in classes, the pro junior as well as cadet was on fire once again today and scored high with powerful moves.

Current highest WQS ranking holder and 1st seed for this event, Keito Matsuoka showed why he holds the highest seeds and put on the show of the day and scored highest among all the competitors and wins his heats. Nobuyuki Osawa , Kento Takahashi, who all surfed the ASP World Pro Junior Champions for Japan, as well as former Team Japan member Shota Nakamura all were on fire as Matsuoka was and showed their high ability and moved into the finals.

Kai Ojima and Koki Nakamura both surfers who surfed the world amateurs contest in France this May for team Japan both surfed hard and Ojima made the round of 16 as well as Nakamura who made the semi finals in the pro junior event.

Sho Kobayashi who now resides in the US and surfs the ASP WQS North America series came back to home soils for the summer vacation and surfed hard and made it to the semi finals but could not make it the the finals with the all japan junior surfers.

The weather conditions at Shida-shita beach changed as the wind turned north-east and turned the wave conditions to on shore and made it testy conditions。Both finals for the cadets as well as pro juniors were held in 25 min. heats. The 4 finalists for the cadet division were 2007Cadet Grand Champion, Arashi Kato, Sho Kobayashi who resides in US, Mao Terashima, and Hiroto Ohara. Arashi Kato showed supreme and took the show to win.

Finally the pro junior finals were held and it was a battle. However in the last 10 seconds it was Nobuyuki Osawa who showed supreme and excellent ability to take the win. The champion is Nobuyuki Osawa.

Nathaniel Curran Wins ASP WQS 6-Star Honda U.S. Open, Takes ASP WQS Ratings Lead

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Sunday, July 27, 2008) – Nathaniel Curran (Oxnard, CA) has claimed the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing presented by O’Neill and the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings lead. The win marks Curran’s first major event victory and his first time atop the ASP WQS ratings.

Curran beat France’s Tim Boal (Hossegor, FRA) in one-to-three foot (1 metre) surf at Huntington Beach Pier this afternoon – the final day of the 10-day competition. His ASP 6-Star victory saw him defeat a field of 192 competitors at the biggest WQS event in North America and the most attended event in professional surfing.

“I’m so pumped I don’t even know what to say,” Curran said. “Everyone was getting me really pumped up because I really wanted to win and I’m stoked. I just tried to keep myself cool and composed the whole time. I was just trying to keep it in rhythm and keep going.”

Winning four heats today, Curran maintained his form to take out the final despite fatigue from surfing three heats earlier in the day. Curran defeated Boal 11.66 to 10.70, both out of a possible 20 point score, by taking advantage of the few waves on offer in the deteriorating conditions.

“I was giving it everything I had and we surfed so many heats today,” Curran said. “Tim Boal did an awesome job and I’m just stoked with the win.”

By claiming the biggest win of his career and jumping to No. 1 on the current ASP WQS ratings, Curran increases his chances of qualifying for the 2009 ASP World Tour. The top 15 WQS surfers at year’s end earn berths onto the elite tour.

“I’m super stoked to be the new WQS No. 1,” Curran said. “It’s tough because there are so many good guys. I’m just trying to focus on each heat and take it one contest at a time. I think all of the training and staying focused is paying off.”

Runner-up Boal, now rated No. 18 on the ASP WQS, put together an excellent effort in his Final battle against Curran, unfortunately he was unable to find the scores needed to claim the U.S. Open Title.
“I’m upset that I lost,” Boal said. “I’m happy with the points, but I would have liked to come away with the win.”

Brett Simpson (Huntington Beach, CA) finished equal 3rd overall – the best result by a Huntington Beach local in the event. Simpson netted some of the event’s highest scores but was unable to earn a final berth over a dominating Boal. His notable effort at the Honda U.S. Open saw him move from No. 15 to No. 7 on the WQS ratings.

Gabe Kling (St. Augustine, FL) earned his highest WQS result of the year with an equal 3rd alongside Simpson. Kling beat fellow former ASP World Tour surfer Shaun Cansdell (Emerald Beach, AUS), WQS standout Nathan Yeomans (San Clemente, CA) and ASP World Tour rookie Jordy Smith (Durban, ZAF) on the way to his semifinal finish.

Taylor Jensen (San Clemente, CA) claimed the O’Neill U.S. Open of Longboarding pres. by Honda title with a combination of traditional longboarding moves and aggressive top-turns. Jensen’s victory over fellow finalists Noah Shimabukuro (Oceanside, CA), Ned Snow (North Shore, HI) and Tony Silvagni (Kerry Beach, NC), earned him his second U.S. Open title – he first won the event in 2003.

“This is my second U.S. Open win and it feels a lot better the second time around,” Jensen said. “The waves are alright for being as windy as it is in Huntington and it’s just fun to go out and surf with some friends.”

Jensen jumped out to an early lead over the competition and led the heat throughout its entirety.

“My goal was to go out and put two decent scores on the board right off the bat,” Jensen said. “I just tried to improve throughout the final and was lucky enough to be able to.”

Tanner Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA) claimed an impressive victory at the O’Neill U.S. Open Pro Junior pres. by Honda today. Gadauskas outscored Julian Wilson (Coolum, AUS), Chris Salisbury (Newport, AUS) and Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA) in a crowd-delighting display of aerial exchanges and big moves.

Wilson jumped out to an early lead with two solid scores over the field but Gudauskas chipped away at the young Australian’s points lead with a flurry of frontside airs to edge out Wilson for the win.

“I’m on top of the world right now,” Gudauskas said. “I knew it was going to take everything I had and I tried my hardest and fortunately the cards went my way. All of the boys were surfing insane all week and they’re some of my favorite surfers, so I was just stoked to be in the heat.”

The next ASP Pro Junior Series event will be the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior presented by Heritage Surf and Sport held in Sea Isle City, New Jersey from August 29-30, 2008.
